Well folks, once again, I found myself in job hell. You know, the blazing inferno you go to 40 hours a week, the one that sucks your life source? Yeah, that one.
Miserable and exhausted, I set out to look for a new job. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted, I just knew that I needed out.
So I did what most desperate people do and hit up a popular job search engine, popped in my zip code and browsed. Terrible idea! I hated just about everything I came across, and those I miraculously didn’t got a “quick-apply.”
As I relayed news of the job hunt to my life coach, he stuck to true coaching form and (gently) called me out. I so desperately wanted out of my current job, yet I was half-assedly applying using one search engine. That’s not exactly sending out the right message to the Universe, is it?
One internal “damn!” and an “ooookay, you’re right” later, I knew I had to take action.
So what did I do? I got clear. I wrote down exactly what I wanted in a job, set the goal, and got to it. That same day, I applied to just one job that I had found on Craigslist before trudging off to work.
The next day, guess who called? The Craigslist employer! We had a great phone conversation, and an even better interview within the week.
…And 2 weeks later, here I am, writing this post from work (and he doesn’t care – really!) This job has everything I wrote down: evening hours, relaxed environment, low pressure, self-directed work, customer-service oriented…With the added (totally unexpected) bonus of being able to work on my blog from work! It’s everything I wanted and then some.
Amazing things happen when you get clear about what you want. Let’s take a look:
BEFORE: Not really sure what I wanted, just needed out of current job hell. Looked half-heartedly on one search engine. Results? Calls for sales jobs (gag). Disheartened, irritated, drained.
AFTER: Perfectly clear about what I wanted in a job. Committed to the search and thoughtfully applied. Got the perfect job. Elated, energized, right on track.
Getting clear about my expectations has been one of the most transformative practices in my life. How can you make it work for you? Share below!
Peace, love and a steaming cup of Zen,
